(May 20, 2013)  Syracuse and Onondaga County have made many “smart” decisions in the past few years.   New urban development, much of it supported by the CNY Regional Economic Development Council, a thought provoking draft countywide sustainability plan, and a plethora of active citizens and groups have gotten the ball rolling towards a brighter future.  Still though, the elephant in to room remains the raised highway that has since the 60’s bifurcated the downtown.

Since 2011, the NYS Department of Transportation has diligently sought after public input as to what is the best alternative for the aging I-81 infrastructure.  Recent news articles and editorials show that the region as a whole remains as divided on the issue as the city is by the viaduct.  As one community leader has put it, I-81 is the most important civic decision in 60 years.
