New York communities participate in Walk to School Day

Walk to School Day is a nationwide annual event designed to get kids off four wheels and onto their two feet. Organizers stress the importance of walking to health and fitness.

Unfortunately, many youth could not participate because their homes are too far flung from their schools, and because the routes between home and school aren’t safe for walking. The percentage of school children walking to school has plummeted since the 1950s as we’ve spread out our communities, building around the car.

The new Complete Streets law in New York State will make walking safer, easier, and more pleasant — you can read about the law here and urge the state for fast implementation.
