(October 17, 2011) Illustrating the dilemma and controversy inherent in higher density development proposals, Washington Heights in northern Manhattan is opposed to a proposal for four apartment towers between 23 and 39 stories in height (existing structures average 6 to 10 stories). Opponents say that this is too dense–that the number of new residents in these high buildings will stress schools and services.
