(January 10, 2013)– For decades the idea of a new interstate highway, nicknamed the “Rooftop Highway” has stirred strong sentiments in the North Country. A recent bombshell in the debate: the St. Lawrence County representatives of the New York State Farm Bureau have reversed their position on the highway, coming out to now support the restoration and upgrading of existing U.S. Route 11 instead of getting behind I-98, which would run parallel to U.S. 11 a few miles away. These state Farm Bureau representatives now believe that a new interstate highway would not better serve agriculture in the region, but would rather suck life from existing communities along U.S. 11, and destroy tens of thousands of acres of farmland.
