(December 14, 2011) Hearings have begun on a controversial proposal for Tupper Lake–a massive 6,200-acre resort complex. As you might imagine, opinions on this project run the gamut. The battle over this development embodies the struggle that Adirondacks communities have faced when trying to balance economic development and conservation. Some believe that the Adirondack preserve is so vast that a vast development or two won’t make a dent, and will be a boon to economic development. The conservationists believe that a development like this will be damaging but also spin off a whole lot of other development incompatible with Adirondacks land, water, and communities.
In January 2012, decisions will be made on the project.
